FAQ
Answers to the most common questions about tube amplifier repair, custom builds, guitar setup, and working with 1337 Sound.
Tube Amplifiers
What is a hand-wired tube amplifier?
A hand-wired tube amplifier is built using point-to-point wiring — components are soldered directly between terminal strips and tube sockets rather than mounted on a printed circuit board. This method, used in all vintage Fender, Marshall, and Vox amplifiers, results in superior tone, easier repairability, and longer component life.
Why hand-wired point-to-point instead of PCB?
PCBs are efficient for mass production but introduce compromises: less optimal component placement, more difficult repairs, and circuit-board-induced signal degradation. Point-to-point hand wiring is how all great vintage amplifiers were built, and it remains the superior method for tone and longevity.
Do you work on all makes and models of tube amplifiers?
Yes. 1337 Sound works on all makes and models of tube amplifiers, from 1950s tweed Fenders and vintage Marshall heads to modern boutique amplifiers. We perform a full DC voltage and signal-path assessment before quoting any repair.
How long does a tube amplifier repair take?
Turnaround time varies by the scope of the repair. Simple tube replacements and bias settings are typically completed quickly, while full recaps or complex fault diagnosis take longer. We provide a time estimate after the initial assessment.
Is it safe to attempt tube amplifier repairs myself?
Not without proper training. The power supply rails in most guitar amplifiers operate at 300–500 volts DC, and filter capacitors store lethal charge even when the amplifier is unplugged. Tube swaps on self-biasing (cathode-biased) amplifiers are generally safe, but anything involving the power supply, bias circuit, or transformers should be handled by a qualified technician.
Custom Builds
How does the custom amplifier build process work?
Every build starts with a conversation — playing style, preferred genres, stage volume, and tonal goals. From there we design around a proven vintage circuit or an original design. You choose cabinet style, speaker configuration, output-tube complement, and cosmetic finish. No components are ordered until you approve the design.
Can I choose my own output tubes?
Yes. 6L6, EL34, EL84, 6V6, and others are all on the table. Each tube type has a distinct sonic character — 6L6 for the American sound, EL34 for British midrange punch, EL84 for chime and compression. We'll discuss the tradeoffs during consultation.
Do you build custom electric guitars?
Yes. 1337 Sound assembles custom electric guitars from hand-selected premium components. You specify every detail — body wood, neck profile, fretboard radius, pickups, hardware, and more — and we build it to those exact specifications.
Guitar Setup & Repair
What is included in a professional guitar setup?
A 1337 Sound guitar setup includes truss rod adjustment for correct neck relief, bridge saddle action adjustment, full intonation setting across all strings, nut slot inspection and lubrication, fret polish, fretboard conditioning, and a restring with your preferred string gauge.
How often does a guitar need a setup?
A guitar that travels to gigs or experiences seasonal humidity changes will benefit from a setup two to four times a year. A guitar that lives in climate-controlled comfort and gets played occasionally may go a year or more between setups. If it's fighting you, that's the clearest sign.
Can you replace pickups and rewire the electronics?
Yes. We handle full electronic refurbishment — potentiometers, switches, output jacks, capacitors — as well as pickup swaps, coil-tap wiring, treble-bleed networks, and other modifications. We document every change so you know exactly what's in your guitar.
