About 1337 Sound
Founded by a musician, engineer, and lifelong tinkerer — built on the belief that "elite" means mastering your craft through deep knowledge and uncompromising work.
1337: What Does It Mean?
In case you are wondering, 1337 Sound (pronounced Leet Sound) gets its name from the language called “Leet speak” made popular by the hacker community. 1337 (Leet) is short for Elite – a term that the hacking community uses to describe those that have mastered their craft.
But in that culture, "elite" didn't mean privileged. It meant someone who had put in the time to truly master their craft — who understood their tools at a fundamental level, not just how to use them but why they worked the way they did. It was a term of respect earned through genuine expertise and dedication.
That philosophy is the foundation of everything we do. We don't build amplifiers the easy way. We build them the right way — point-to-point hand wiring, premium components, thorough consultation, zero shortcuts.
1337 Sound started when an InfoSec guy who happened to play guitar got fed up with the quality of most commercially produced guitar amplifiers and the quality of guitar builds, repair and setup. He started building his own tube amplifiers and working on guitars for himself and his friends. With a long history of mastering do-it-yourself projects and a knack for technical learning, he polished up his skills and dove into to building amps and guitars.
The tag line “for the discerning musician” has a deep meaning. Most players are obsessed with tone. 1337 Sound strives to understand the unique needs and nuances of each player with the goal to help find that signature tone we all seek. We believe simpler is better. Technique and tools (guitar and amplifier) are the first step in becoming the best player you can be. Adding effects and other layers won’t make you a better player.
Whether you are an experienced player or just getting started, you owe it to yourself to spend time digging into the “little things” that can make a world of difference in your tone and playing ability. Maybe its a new guitar. Maybe just a few mods to an existing guitar. Maybe it’s a tube amp that you never considered before. If you are searching, let me help point you in the right direction. 1337 Sound provides discerning musicians with concierge service in their musical quest for their signature sound.
1337 Sound does not mass produce amplifiers or guitars. Every amp and every instrument is built only after careful player consultation to the specifications agreed on with the player. The goal is to produce the best fitting amp or guitar tailored to the musician’s needs. Browse through our service offerings. If something sounds interesting to you, let us know. We love to talk about ways in which we can help you find your signature sound!
A Player Who Builds. An Engineer Who Listens.
The founder of 1337 Sound describes himself as "an above average player with a critical ear for good tone" — not a virtuoso, but someone whose 46 years with the instrument and nearly 30 years of professional sound engineering have developed an unusually calibrated sense for what makes a rig work.
His background in information security — a field that rewards deep understanding of systems, rigorous troubleshooting, and precision execution — translates directly to amplifier design and repair. Electronics is electronics. The same discipline that makes a great security engineer makes a great amp builder.
When commercial amplifiers consistently failed to deliver the tone and build quality he was looking for, he started building his own. Those builds got noticed. Friends wanted them. Eventually, clients did too. 1337 Sound was the natural result.
Work With UsCore Values
Simpler Is Better
Great tone starts with great fundamentals — a guitar that plays well and an amplifier that responds honestly to your touch. We help you get that foundation right before anything else.
Deep Technical Knowledge
Understanding electronics at a component level — not just swapping parts — means we can diagnose root causes, design purposeful modifications, and build circuits that perform exactly as intended.
Collaborative Process
Nothing gets built or modified without a thorough conversation first. Your input guides every decision from circuit selection to cosmetic finish.
No Compromises
We use quality components because we've heard what cheap ones sound like and how fast they fail. The cost difference on a build is real. The difference in outcome is larger.
